1800’s WELLS FARGO & Co STAGECOACH DRIVER BELT.Wells Fargo began as Wells & Company in 1852, offering express and banking services to California settlements during the Gold Rush. The first stagecoach was introduced in 1853, a Concord model carrying up to 8 passengers and 2,000 pounds of freight. These coaches, pulled by teams of four or six horses, were the “wagons” of the era, transporting mail, gold, silver, and goods between cities like San Francisco, Sacramento, and Marysville. Drivers also often road shotgun sitting next to the driver for extra protection and to monitor the road. The job was hazardous. Between 1886 and 1892, Well Fargo suffered 74 stagecoach robberies in California. Robbers, called “road agents,” sometimes forced drivers to abandon the wagon on steep grades. The company responded by bolting treasure boxes to the floor by the late 1860s. Drivers faced risks from bandits, accidents, and harsh conditions, but their skill and courage were vital to the company’s survival. Belt measures 36 inches long and 1/5/8” wide.
