Quantrill was a prominent Confederate guerrilla leader during the Civil War who is most famous for having led a raid on the Unionist town of Lawrence, Kansas, in August 1863. Confederate bushwhackers such as Quantrill and pro Union jayhawkers used irregular tactics in Kansas and Missouri, contributing to a prolonged and violent guerrilla conflict in the region and the creation of a romantic outlaw mythology after the war.
