The Territorial Governor, Nathan Oakes Murphy, succeeded in not only getting the legislature to authorize the force but also in getting the funding to support it. On March 21, 1901, the legislative act became effective authorizing the company of Rangers, modeled after the Texas Rangers, made up of fourteen (14) men; one Captain hired at $120.00 per month, one Sergeant hired at $75.00 per month, and twelve (12) Privates hired at $55.00 each per month. $2975

Here’s a Smith & Wesson revolver that most of you do not have in your collections. This is a Smith & Wesson Model 11-4. Now the WWII pre-model number guns aren’t rare….S&W made many thousands for the British during the war…but the later “Model Number” guns are scarce. This revolver was a factory over-run from a contract made for the South African Police (note S.A.P. marking on the backstrap). It was originally manufactured in 1962 but was held in the factory collection until 1996 when it was delivered to the famous auction house Butterfield & Butterfield to be sold.
Built on the 4-screw K-frame, this revolver is in outstanding condition and rates “As New in Box”. It wears a 4″ barrel with fixed sights and is chambered for the .38 S&W 178-grain cartridge. A lanyard loop is present in the butt. All original, including the Magna style diamond grips which number to the gun. Perfect bore and action. Comes in the original box that is in fair condition from years of storage (see pics). Also comes with a Smith & Wesson factory letter detailing the sale via Butterworth & Butterworth (this information may also be found in the Supica’s “Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson”). This is a great gun and very hard to locate. It would make a worthy addition to any Smith & Wesson collection. $5995
