RARE INDIAN WAR ”ROPES” PATTERN HOLSTER COLT SINGLE ACTION & SMITH & WESSON SCHOFIELD REVOLVER.
Full flap military holster for the Colt Cavalry Single Action or Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver. The black leather holster has the tapered body and full flap of a late Civil War Army pattern revolver holster with two unique features: (1) an extended belt loop/skirt attached to the body by a riveted loop and (2) ten .45 caliber cartridge loops attached to the mouth of the holster and fully covered by the flap. The holster has a sewn toe plug, brass closure finial and leather closure strap sewn and riveted to the holster flap. The holster flap is stamped with unit markings: “C 139” and “42”. An identical holster is illustrated on page 30 of “PACKING IRON” by Richard Rattenbury and the holster is illustrated and fully described on pages 146 and 147 of “U.S. MILITARY HOLSTERS AND PISTOL CARTRIDGE BOXES” by Edward S. Meadows. Both Rattenbury and Meadows describe the holster as an experimental pattern apparently designed by Captain James M. Ropes of the 8th Cavalry. A small number of these may have been manufactured by the San Antonio Arsenal between 1883 and 1890. The Ropes Holster was designed to provide the cavalry trooper with a holster with a large “Mexican Loop” that could fit over a loaded .45-70 cartridge belt and also provide easy accessibility for additional .45 caliber revolver cartridges. $1295

BUFFALO HUNTERS CASE & GLASSES.
Most rare Buffalo Hunters Glasses in the original Buffalo hide case. On the inside of case is the man’s name that wore them. ALFRED CROSS OCT 1871. Before white settlers began to push into the vast west in any great numbers, an estimated 50-60 million buffalo freely roamed upon the Great Plains. American Indians hunted them for food and other necessities, and a harmonious ebb and flow between man and beast prevailed. However, after the Civil War, that would change as more and more people moved westward. As a result, new army posts were established and to supply those many soldiers, the army contracted with local men to supply buffalo meat to feed the troops. At about the same time, the iron horse also began to blaze a trail into the west, and these construction men also had to be fed. Adding to the need for food, people back east were demanding buffalo robes that they used as coats and lap robes when riding in sleighs and carriages. These events put many a man to work as buffalo hunters. $2795

14K DEPUTY U.S MARSHAL GEORGE MALEDON FORT SMITH ARKANSAS GOLD POCKET WATCH.
Prince of the hangmen” was George Maledon. Maledon was a Civil War veteran and a crack shot and always wore two pistols. He was not only hangman but executioner by gun shot for several men attempting escape from the jail at Fort Smith. One man, aware of Maledon’s reputation, escaped knowing he would be shot, because he preferred death by Maledon’s gun rather than by his noose. Maledon was a man proud of his work. His ropes were the finest from St. Louis and he tied the knot in such a fashion to break the man’s neck instantly rather then have him strangle. During his career he hung 60 of the 79 men to die on the Fort Smith gallows. Once asked if he feared the ghosts of the men he hung, he replied that he never hung a man that came back to have it done over. After his career was over he toured the nation at carnivals and fairs displaying some of the nooses he used and to explain his craft. P.O.R

There is also some information on drivers of the Cal-Oregon stagecoach company that Wells Fargo contracted with. For most of Wells Fargo‘s staging history, independent locally-run stage lines carried the express. VIRGIL EARP PHOTO TOMBSTONE CITY MARSHAL OK CORRAL.
Virgil Earp seated to very left wearing his Tombstone City Marshal Badge. While in Prescott, Arizona, Virgil was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshal for the eastern portion of Pima County on November 27, 1879 by U.S. Marshall Crawley Dake. He was asked by Dake to move to Tombstone to help resolve ongoing problems with lawless Cowboys. In an interview after he left Tombstone, Virgil noted that “The first stage that went out of Prescott toward Tombstone was robbed. Robberies were frequent and became expensive. Virgil joined his brothers Wyatt and Jim in Tombstone in December 1879. On October 30, 1880, after town marshal Fred White was shot and killed by outlaw and gunman Curly Bill, Virgil was also appointed acting town marshal of Tombstone. Virgil now held both the local town marshal position and a federal law enforcement. But less than two weeks later Ben Sippy beat Virgil for the town marshal job in a special election. When Tombstone was incorporated as a city on February 1, 1881, Virgil chose not to run against Sippy. However, Sippy was known to be in financial trouble. He requested a two-week leave of absence on June 6, 1881, and the city council once again appointed Virgil as temporary city marshal. On June 22, the center section of Tombstone was devastated by a fire. Virgil kept looting under control and chased off lot jumpers who tried to take over property. On June 28, it was learned that Sippy had left about $3,000 in bad debt and financial improprieties in his office. Virgil was appointed by Tombstone Mayor John Clum as the permanent city marshal and paid $150.00 per month. P.O.R
