ELEANOR BOARDMAN MOVIE STAR PHOTO.
8 X 10
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Boardman was originally on stage but, after temporarily losing her voice, in 1922, she entered silent films. There followed months of fruitless effort until one day Rupert Hughes saw her riding a horse and gave her a part in a film and she quickly began to attract audiences. She was chosen by Goldwys Pictures as their “New Face of 1922,” through which she signed a contract with the company. After several successful supporting roles, she played the lead in 1923’s Souls for Sale.
Her growing popularity was reflected by inclusion on the list of WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1923. She appeared in fewer than forty films during her career, achieving her greatest success in Vidor’s The Crowd in 1928. Her performance in that film is widely recognized as one of the outstanding performances in American silent films.
Unable to make the transition from silent to talking pictures, Boardman retired in 1935, and retreated from Hollywood. Her only subsequent appearance was in an interview filmed for the Kevin Brownlow and David Gill documentary series Hollywood in 1980. $350
HEDDA HOPPER MOVIE STAR PHOTO.
8 X 10
Hedda Hopper (May 2, 1885 – February 1, 1966) was one of America’s best-known gossip columnists, notorious for feuding with her arch-rival Louella Parsons. She had been a middling actress of stage and screen for years before being offered the chance to write the column “Hedda Hopper’s Hollywood” for the Los Angeles Times in 1938. In the McCarthy era she named suspected communists. Hopper continued to write gossip to the end, her work appearing in many magazines and later on radio. $375
PATSY RUTH MILLER MOVIE STAR PHOTO.
8 X 10
She was born on January 17, 1904.
After being discovered by the actress Alla Nazimova at a Hollywood party, Patsy Ruth Miller got her first break with a small role in Camille, which starred Rudolph Valentino. Her roles gradually improved, and she was chosen as a WAMPAS Baby Star in 1922.
In 1923, she was acclaimed for her performance as Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame opposite Lon Chaney, S.
In the later part of the decade Miller appeared chiefly in light romantic comedies, opposite such actors as Clive Brook and Edward Everett Horton. Among her film credits in the late 1920s are Broken Hearts of Hollywood (1926), A Hero for a Night (1927), Hot Heels (1928), and The Aviator (1929).
She retired from films in 1931. She made a cameo appearance in the 1951 film Quebec, which starred John Barrymore Jr., and stated in her autobiography that she had participated as a joke. She came out of retirement to do the film Mother in 1978.
She later achieved recognition as a writer. She won three O. Henry Awards for her short stories, wrote a novel, radio scripts, and plays. She also performed for a brief time on Broadway.
Miller was married three times, the first two ended in divorce. Her first husband was film director Tay Garnett and the second was screenwriter John Lee Mahin. Her third husband, businessman E.S. Deans, died in 1986. The frequent news about her love life once earned Miller the sobriquet the most engaged girl in Hollywood.
Patsy Ruth Miller died at her home at the age of 91 in Palm Desert, California. $350
