BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS.

BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS GROUPING. UNITED STATES SCOUT.

Collection belonged to Secretary of War William W. Belknap. TEXAS-INDIAN WARS By 1870 the native Seminoles were living on a reservation in the Indian Territory but originally they came from Florida. Before the United States government banned slavery in December 1865, several hundred black freedmen escaped their masters and sought refuge among the Seminoles in Florida. Not long after the Seminoles were removed to the Indian Territory, the Black Seminoles, as they became, went to Coahulia, Mexico, to escape enslavement. There they were welcomed by the Mexicans and later joined by native Seminoles, Black Creeks and Black Cherokees. In 1870, the United States Army issued a message to the Black Seminoles’ chief, John Horse, inviting him and his band to come back to the United States to enlist as Indian scouts and help fight hostile natives Americans. The Black Seminoles, about 200 people, accepted the agreement, believing that they would be granted land in the United States, food and provisions, as well as reimbursement for traveling costs. Though over the years none of these conditions were met. The future scouts crossed the international border on July 4 and were officially mustered into service on August 18 at Fort Duncan, near Eagle Pass, Texas. However, in July 1872, most of the scouts were moved to Fort Clark, near Brackettville. Their first able commander was a Quaker and Civil War veteran, Lieutenett John L Bullis, the others were too unreliable to control the unit. Having been a commander of black soldiers during the Civil War, Bullis was trusted by his men and even asked to perform marriages for the tribe. Between May 1872 and 1881, the Seminole scouts fought in several successful engagements with Comanches, Kiowas, Apaches and Kickapoos, sometimes traveling into Mexico, the Indian Territory and Kansas. BUFFALO HUNTERS GLASSES.

BUFFALO HUNTER CASE & GLASSES.

Most rare Buffalo Hunters Glasses in the original Buffalo hide case. On the inside of case is the man’s name that wore them. ALFRED CROSS OCT 1871.

Before white settlers began to push into the vast west in any great numbers, an estimated 50-60 million buffalo freely roamed upon the Great Plains. American Indians hunted them for food and other necessities, and a harmonious ebb and flow between man and beast prevailed.

However, after the Civil War, that would change as more and more people moved westward. As a result, new army posts were established and to supply those many soldiers, the army contracted with local men to supply buffalo meat to feed the troops. At about the same time, the iron horse also began to blaze a trail into the west, and these construction men also had to be fed. Adding to the need for food, people back east were demanding buffalo robes that they used as coats and lap robes when riding in sleighs and carriages. These events put many a man to work as buffalo hunters. $2495

HUDSON BAY PEACE PIPE.

RARE HUDSON BAY PEACE PIPE.

Rare Indian Peace Pipe maker marked HB (Hudson Bay). Pipe tomahawks are probably the most coveted of the trade tomahawks and usually the most expensive.    The same was true during the fur trade era however many of these were presented as presents to the chiefs of tribes to encourage their loyality, some with elaborate and expensive inlays and craftsmenship.  They were multipurpose tools in the sense they could be used in war and for smoking rather than carrying both items separately.  But they were also very symbolic in that they could be used both for war and for peace.  Many were made in Sheffield, England & in North America.   Although any wood could be used they often used osage orange for it’s resistance to decay, or ash because the saplings pithy core could be easily bored with a red hot poker or sometimes curly maple with inlays if a Kentucky Rifle maker was doing it.   Some were made not to be used as weapons but as a smoking item reminesisant of days gone by.
